Life With An 11 Month Old

Happy 11 months Mikayla! I’m super late posting this cus she’s turning 1 in a couple weeks! LOL I’m terrible. I’m planning Mikayla’s FIRST birthday. It’s at the end of July and we’re going to have a Fiesta with family and friends! We’ll have tacos, churros, cute cactus cupcakes, Mexican sodas and a piñata of course! I can’t believe she’s going to be ONE in a month! Time is flying by.

Along with her birthday party plans, our little family has a few other things going on. We’re moving AGAIN. This time we’re moving to our new home in Ladner. Hopefully this will be the last time we move for a long time. We’ve been living with our parents for the past 6 months waiting for our place to finish. I can’t wait to get in there, furnish it, decorate it and make it our home.

I’m also going back to work on the 24th. Dun. Dun DUNNNN. Not lying… I’m actually really excited to go back to work. I’m excited to see my coworkers, to be working alongside one of my bestest friends and just to be able to exercise a different part of my brain. I’m nervous, but excited. Hmm! What should I wear on my first day?! It feels like going back to school again! I will miss my booboo! I’ll miss not having any plans for the day and just hanging out with her. We’re lucky that throughout my Mat leave, we’ve lived near the river so we were able to go to the beach almost everyday and head into Steveston. She loves people watching and loves meeting other kids.

We managed to FINALLY squeeze in a family photoshoot! Honestly, Chris doesn’t like photoshoots. It’s weird for him. So it was super important we had a photographer who was fun, professional and made us feel natural. Our photographer was Noelle Nikas. Her style is fun, colourful and whimsical. We had a great day with her and she captured some great moments of us.

In the photos Mikayla just wanted to walk on her own! But she can’t just yet. I mean, sorta! She took her first steps at 10 months old with my Mom at her house while she was watching her. Unfortunately no one else was around so we tease my Mom because she didn’t get it on video so it didn’t count. But her first steps with me, were in Steveston, on the grass across the street from Blendz. I’ll never forget it!

That same day we signed our mortgage papers for the new place and the lady from Scotiabank in Ladner said “Okay guys! Welcome to Delta!” I never thought I’d hear those words! I always saw myself as a Vancouver and Richmond girl. But we’re so excited for our move. It’ll be a good place to watch Mikayla grow up.

And man, is she ever growing up fast. Here’s a rundown of other things Mikayla does now that she’s 11 months.

  1. First words – mama, dada but she says them repeatedly and doesn’t know what they mean. So it’s “mama mamamama maaaa maa ma mamama”.
  2. She knows who Zoey is, and when we ask “where’s Zoey?” she looks at the ground looking for her.
  3. She waves hi and bye.
  4. Her kisses are so cute. When you ask for a kiss she gives you her face – she’ll lean in but doesn’t know how to pucker her lips for a kiss yet.
  5. She loves splashing in little pools of water, or the river, the beach and she loves swimming at the pool.
  6. She crawls and furniture cruises. She has taken her first steps but she’s still scared to take a step on her own without and coaxing.
  7. She’s more independent, and can feed herself and drink out of her bottle and sippy cup. She still loves cheese and all kinds of noodles. Her new faves are chicken, watermelon and blueberries.
  8. She enjoys playing with her toys, opening and closing doors and cupboards, and sometimes if we take her away from what she’s doing she throws a bit of a tantrum. She understands “No” but saying “No” sometimes leads to a fuss. We usually distract her with things if we don’t want her to open a cupboard or if she’s reaching and touching something that she’s not allowed to touch. I find out of sight, out of mind works best. So if she’s trying to open a cabinet with some electronics or nice bowls in it, I usually take her out of that area and into an area with her toys or books and we’ll play a new game. It’s pretty normal for her to want to touch and grab everything. She’s just exploring and seeing what she likes and doesn’t like.
  9. She “dances” and nods her head up and down when she hears music, especially when she hears songs from Daniel Tiger Neighbourhood and Thomas and Friends.
  10. Annnd… I’m still nursing her. Just once at night and sometimes before she naps. I think she’s just nursing for comfort, cus I’m not sure if there’s any milk left in there! Haha.
