The Urban Mom’s Spring Bucket List

Here we are, rolling into our second Spring with COVID restrictions! Time to get creative with our adventures and things to do around us, while staying safe. While many main attractions are busy on the weekends, here are some unique places and activities that you and the kids can enjoy throughout the week.

Collect Fresh Eggs from a Farm

There’s something so cute and simple about collecting fresh eggs. To see the kids faces when they find an egg in the coop is priceless! They’re either so excited to have found an egg or absolutely mortified that their beloved eggs come from a “chicken butt”. Hopefully the former, not the latter! Haha!! If you’re in the Vancouver area, visit @TheChicksof96th on Instagram for details of how to get there and their procedures.

Say Hi to the Goats

We read a lot of books with animals in them, cartoons with animals as the characters, so it’s fun to see real animals up close and personal! Every weekend, now till June, Taves Family Farm in Abbotsford puts on an event called GOATerdays. You can reserve a time slot to meet the Goats and their other farm animal friends. Taves Family Farm also has a new Estate Cidery Tasting Barn where you can stop for a drink, slushy and some snacks.

Visit the Alpacas at the Farm

On 248th street in Langley you’ll find Kensington Prairie Farm. This is a working farm and not a petting zoo, but you can book a tour to learn about Alpacas, feed them and tour the farm. Since our kids are pretty young, we opted out of the tour and just did our own exploring at our own pace. Seeing the Alpacas up close and personal was so fun. They all have unique faces! This farm also has a beautiful boutique where they sell goods made from Alpaca wool.

Also on 248th, you’ll find JD Turkey Farm (great spot for lunch) and Krause Berry Farms which is a delicious place to pick up in season berries or a pie for dessert!

Go on an Aquabus Adventure

This is a great day trip for a sunny day. In Vancouver, we can travel to different areas of the city on small boats called an Aquabus. You can purchase tickets beforehand or you can get your ticket with the Skipper and get a roundtrip ticket to save some money. We like to park at Stamps Landing, walk east towards Olympic Village, have lunch or explore the area then get an Aquabus from Olympic Village to Granville Island. At Granville Island, we explore the playground, get donuts from Lees Donuts and then get fish and chips to go for dinner. Afterwards, we take the Aquabus from Granville Island back to our car at Stamps Landing.

Have a Beach Picnic

Metro Vancouver has some amazing beaches. Kitsilano, English Bay, Jericho, Spanish Banks, Garry Point in Steveston, Centennial Beach in Tsawwassen and White Rock are some beautiful ones. Bring a beach blanket, some toys and of course snacks and drinks! Have fun collecting shells, rocks and building sandcastles.

Surprise someone with flowers

There’s a flower farm in Ladner called River and Sea Flowers, they have the cutest little farm stand where they sell beautiful and unique flowers like these Ranunculus’ by the bunch! Get a bunch of seasonal flowers and surprise someone special to let them know you care!

Have a picnic at the playground

We always google BEST SANDWICHES or BEST FRIED CHICKEN, or BEST DONUTS… stuff like that and once we find a good place to eat, we look for a playground thats nearby to have a picnic. In this photo we’re enjoying a fried chicken sandwich from WIN WIN CHICK’N in Steveston. So we’re having dinner at Steveston Park. After dinner we walked over to the Village for Ice Cream and Mini Donuts.

A Rainy Day at a Play Place

Kidtropolis in Richmond is a great place to spend a rainy afternoon. It’s the cutest! They have a great indoor playground with slides and a whole miniature town with a play hospital, gas station, bank, grocery store, news studio, pizza restaurant and more. My kids love it here and their imaginations go wild.

Another great place to go with really little kids are Circus Play Cafe in Vancouver or Nook Play Studio in Tsawwassen.

Plant a veggie garden

Surprisingly, my kids eat more veggies when they’ve harvested it themselves. Last year we grew rainbow carrots and each time we went to the garden to pick some they would eat them! It’s easy to grow your own veggies. You need a sunny spot, with some fresh soil (I like using the brand Sea Soil) and you’ll need to remember to water your garden every evening or morning. Growing carrots, radishes, zucchini, squash, lettuce, snap peas, english peas and tomatoes are really easy! Keep up with watering and some light weeding, and you’ll be eating fresh veggies every day in the Summer.
