5 Kid Friendly Books about Remembrance Day

November 11th, Remembrance Day is an important day for Canadians. If you’re looking for picture books and kid friendly books about Remembrance Day that make it easier for kids 5 and up to understand here is a great list we have curated with the help of Black Bond Books.

Remembrance Day is a day where we reflect on the past and how fortunate we are and how we can improve for the future. It’s a good opportunity to talk to our kids about the sacrifices that were made to be where we are now and a good opportunity to learn about conflict and peace. I find that the best way to start conversations like this is through reading books and attending events.

Here are 5 Kid Friendly Books About Remembrance Day

A Poppy Is To Remember

Heather Patterson, Ron Lightburn
Good for Ages 6-8

How did the bright red poppy that we all wear in November become Canada’s symbol of honouring those who fought for our freedom on Remembrance Day?
Moving text coupled with stunning illustrations by Governor General’s Award-winning artist Ron Lightburn explain the symbolism behind the poppy.

A Bear in the War

Stephanie Innes, Harry Endrulat, Brian Deines
Good for ages 6-10

During World War One, a young girl slips her teddy bear into a care package for her father, a medic posted to the trenches of France. Although her father dies in the battle of Passchendaele, his belongings are shipped back to his family, along with the toy bear, which today sits in the Canadian War Museum in Ottawa.

Winnie

Sally M Walker, Jonathan D Voss
Great for ages 4-8

Who could care for a bear?

When Harry Colebourn saw a baby bear for sale at the train station, he knew he could care for it. Harry was a veterinarian. But he was also a soldier in training for World War I.

Harry named the bear Winnie, short for Winnipeg, his company’s home town, and he brought her along to the training camp in England. Winnie followed Harry everywhere and slept under his cot every night. Before long, she became the regiment’s much-loved mascot.

Bunny The Brave War Horse

Elizabeth MacLeod
Great for ages 6-8

This poignant picture book is based on the true story of a police horse named Bunny and his riders, brothers Bud and Tom Dundas, who were sent to the European front in World War I.

Proud as a Peacock, Brave as a Lion

Jane Barclay
Great for kids ages 5 and older

This is an endearing story of a proud grandfather who tells his tale of war and his history to his grandson.
